Community Update: Structure Loss Assessments

Initial damage assessments have confirmed significant structural loss as a result of the Bradley Creek Wildfire.

OKIB has begun contacting individuals and families where structure losses have been confirmed. These conversations are taking place directly and privately before additional information is shared more broadly.

The full extent of the damage remains unknown. At this time, more than 30 structures have been confirmed lost. That number is not considered final and is expected to significantly increase as damage assessments continue and additional areas become safe for emergency crews to access.

There are still areas that remain unsafe to enter due to active fire, hazardous trees, damaged infrastructure, downed power lines, and other safety concerns. Emergency crews will continue assessing those areas as conditions allow.

We recognize there will be more difficult conversations in the hours and days ahead as additional assessments are completed. Our priority is to ensure affected individuals and families receive confirmed information directly from OKIB before it is publicly reported or shared through other channels.

We know many Members are waiting for news about their homes and properties. We ask for your continued patience as this work progresses. Confirming the full extent of the damage takes time, and our responsibility is to ensure the information we share is accurate before it is released.

OKIB’s previous experience with the 2021 White Rock Lake Fire is leading the process of confirmation and connecting with families before information is more broadly shared.

Chief Dan Wilson added “for many people watching, this wildfire is measured in hectares and structure loss. For our community, it’s measured in homes, family histories, and places people have spent their lives. That’s why our focus has been, and will continue to be, on supporting our people while we begin the long work of recovery”.

Chief and Council, the Emergency Operations Centre, and OKIB staff remain committed to supporting affected families and will continue working alongside BC Wildfire Service and emergency response partners throughout the assessment and recovery process.
