Community Update: Use Caution Following Heavy Rainfall
Update as of 7:00 p.m., Aug. 22, 2026
The first significant rainfall since the Bradley Creek Wildfire moved through the area this evening, bringing a brief period of intense rain.
Following a wildfire, burned areas can react differently to heavy rainfall. With less vegetation and changes to the soil, water can move more quickly across the landscape, increasing the potential for runoff, erosion and the movement of ash, soil, rocks and other debris.
While this evening’s rainfall was relatively brief, these conditions can create hazards in fire-affected areas during and after periods of heavy or sustained rain.
Please watch for:
- sudden or localized flooding;
- increased runoff and erosion;
- movement of soil, rocks or debris;
- debris flows, mudslides or rockfall;
- blocked or overwhelmed culverts and drainage channels; and
- rapidly rising or changing water conditions in creeks and drainage areas.
Use extra caution around burned slopes, creeks, drainage channels and low-lying areas. Do not enter flowing water or attempt to cross areas where water, mud or debris is moving.
OKIB will continue to monitor conditions in fire-affected areas. Call 911 if flooding, slope movement or other conditions pose an immediate threat to life or safety. Please continue to monitor official OKIB channels for updates.
