Community Update: Unwelcomed Persons and Trespass Bylaw

June 16, 2026

way’ Members,

One of the most important responsibilities of Chief and Council is helping ensure our community remains a safe place for our people. At the Chief and Council meeting on June 1, 2026, Council adopted the updated Unwelcome Persons and Trespass Bylaw, replacing and amending the previous Dangerous Persons and Trespass Bylaw. The updated bylaw came into effect on June 5, 2026.

Over the years, many members have spoken with us about concerns related to individuals whose actions have affected the safety, comfort, and well-being of others. We have heard from Elders, families, and community members who want stronger measures in place when serious situations arise. The purpose of the updated bylaw is to provide a clear process and additional tools to respond when an individual’s actions pose a risk to others or negatively affect the community.

We recognize that every situation is different. Decisions made under the bylaw will be considered carefully and based on the circumstances of each case. This bylaw is not about excluding people without reason. It is about protecting the broader community when safety concerns arise. It reflects what many members have been asking for and provides a way for Chief and Council to take action when it is necessary.

At the end of the day, our responsibility is to the community. Members deserve to feel safe in their homes, safe at community events, and safe when using community spaces. This bylaw is one step toward supporting that goal. Thank you to everyone who has shared their concerns and perspectives over the years. Your voices continue to help guide the decisions we make on behalf of the community.

Chief Dan Wilson and Council
