Fish Passage Restoration Work Set to Begin along Six Mile Creek
July 13th, 2026
Fish habitat restortation along Equesis (6 Mile Creek) at Westside Road is set to begin.
During construction, community members can expect increased construction vehicle traffic along Westside Road between Jack Road and Victoria Road near the OKIB Fire Hall. OKIB environmental monitors will be on site throughout the project, and every effort will be made to minimize disruptions.
Once completed, the project will restore year-round fish passage by replacing existing barriers in the creek that currently prevent Indigenous fish species from moving freely upstream. It will also stabilize the creek banks, reduce erosion and flood risk, improve habitat for fish and wildlife, and maintain the creek’s water withdrawal function.
This work is especially significant as salmon continue returning to their historic spawning waters following improvements that restored their passage through Okanagan Lake. Restoring tributaries like Equesis (6 Mile Creek) helps reconnect important habitat and supports the long-term health of the watershed for future generations.
Following construction, the site will be replanted with native vegetation and monitored to ensure the restoration is successful over the coming years. The project is being undertaken through a partnership between the Okanagan Indian Band and the Okanagan Nation Alliance.
Work is expected to continue through October. We thank the community for its patience while this work is underway.
