OKIB Youth Leadership Council – Friday Teen Nights
Soft launch starts tonight! June 26th at New Horizons
Youth 19+ will have to submit a Criminal Record Check
The Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB) Youth Leadership Council (YLC) are shaping the future by addressing upstream challenges and demonstrating strong leadership through their identified initiatives to build informed, confident and interconnected Youth. This initiative strengthens the work that is needed to further leadership skills and increase Cultural confidence and promote a safe environment within the OKIB community for Youth that operates after hours.
Purpose: Youth Leadership Council Teen Night supports OKIB Youth in revitalizing and sustaining their cultural practices, knowledge transfer and community benefit, promotes Youth empowerment and leadership, Youth recreation, personal motivation, connection and relationship building, crime prevention, safety, and a potential for wellness and positive outcomes.
The Ask: OKIB Youth have submitted suggestions on activities for teen nights such as stick games, drum & rattle making, movie & game night, teen dance, cooking classes & food safety, sports, and recreation.
Commitment & Timeline: Members of YLC have identified dates to host Teen Night throughout the summer and where they can support as a chaperone (18+). Teen Night will run as a Pilot Program in partnership with the OKIB Youth Recreation Activities, from July 3, 2026, to September 4, 2026, on Friday evenings from 6-10PM with four Fridays starting earlier to accommodate other activities. While Teen Night is intended for youth ages 13-18, chaperones are required to inform staff if any Youth are between the ages of 19-25, as they will be required to fill out a criminal record check in the vulnerable sector to be able to participate.
To ensure a supportive atmosphere, safety protocols, and access to support resources, such as OKIB Youth mentors, OKIB Youth Workers (CFS), Youth Peer Support workers, and counselors, will be in place throughout the duration of the Teen Nights.
Members of YLC are introducing workshops and initiatives that they can facilitate to the Youth participants – such as stick game teachings and beading workshops. In addition, YLC is introducing a new climate action initiative on reducing landfill waste and fast-fashion. We are partnering with the City of Vernon and their climate action coordinator on a “Shop and Bop Clothing Swap” so that Youth have an opportunity to donate clothing, and or swap used clothing, while listening to music and connecting with other Youth while learning about climate change/action.
