Free Indigenous Name Document Replacements End May 30th, 2026

Way’ Members,

In June 2021, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced a special, time-limited measure in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action 17.

This policy has allowed Indigenous Peoples to reclaim and use their Indigenous names on certain federal travel and status documents through a one-time, free replacement of existing valid documents. This notice is most relevant to First Nation citizens in Canada, and those holding Canadian-issued federal documents.

 Documents including under this program:

  • Canadian passports
  • Permanent Resident (PR) cards
  • Canadian citizenship certificates

This program ends on May 30th, 2026. After this time regular fees will be applicable to document renewal.
