Health Bulletin – Check immunization records before travelling
With increasing numbers of measles cases in Canada and abroad, it is important to ensure you are protected before traveling to areas with high measles rates.
About Measles:
Measles is a very contagious viral infection that spreads through the air and close contact.
Symptoms include rash, fever, cough, and tiredness. In some cases, measles can cause serious health
problems or even be fatal.
Current Situation:
• So far this year, Canada has reported over 2,500 measles cases — a sharp increase from 147 cases
in 2024.
• British Columbia has reported 10 cases in 2025.
• Other countries are also experiencing measles outbreaks.
Vaccination in B.C.:
• The measles vaccine is given in two doses:
o The first dose (MMR vaccine) is given on or after child’s first birthday.
o The second dose (MMRV vaccine) is given when the child starts school.
Special Travel Vaccination Recommendations:
• Infants aged 6 to 11 months traveling to an area with a measles outbreak can get an extra MMR
dose before travel.
• Children with only one MMR dose can receive their second dose before traveling to these
areas.
• Adults should have two documented doses of a measles-containing vaccine before traveling to
places with outbreaks.
