Vancouver Canucks Hockeyball program

Okanagan Indian Band Youth Activities is beyond thrilled to announce our partnership with the Vancouver Canucks! Over the last year, Youth Activities Lead, Brendon Caron, has been working with Vancouver Canucks Manager of Minor Hockey, Alumni, and Community Engagement, Rod Brathwaite, to develop an accessible introductory hockey program called Canucks Hockeyball.

This program is designed to meet youth where they’re at, and requires no set facility to deliver. The Canucks have graciously provided OKIB with a modular board system designed to quickly set up a program anywhere, along with sticks, balls, nets, goalie gear, and everything else required for a National Hockey League Experience!

Canucks Hockeyball is a 6-week program that will be delivered by OKIB Youth Activities Staff as part of our After School Programs. Youth Activities Coordinators Ethan Joe and Katherine Clarke, as well as community members Stephane Richard (Spirit North) and Nolan Wilson were all trained by the Canucks staff on Hockeyball, and are excited to begin coaching our youth, instilling a love of hockey, and keeping everyone active throughout the school year.

Our ultimate goal is to provide a fun, dynamic, and safe sporting experience that brings people together and strengthens our community.

To celebrate this incredible program, and to kick things off, the Canucks and OKIB Youth Activities are hosting an Activation Event on the Pro-D Day September 23rd from 11:00am to 2:00pm at the Centennial Outdoor Arena at the Vernon Rec Centre. This event will be for all OKIB Youth aged 6-18 (younger kids also welcome if accompanied by a parent) Come try Hockeyball, meet Fin, get autographs from notable Canucks Alumni like Kirk MacLean, and more!
