Job Opportunity – Gardener – K’nmalka? Senqalten

Okanagan College is seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a Gardener for the Indigenous, K’nmalka? Senqalten Garden located at our Vernon campus. We invite members of the OKIB community who have a love for plants, a commitment to sustainability, and a desire to contribute to cultural revitalization to apply for this exciting position.

Key Functions and Duties:

As a Gardener at the Indigenous Garden, you will play a vital role in maintaining the beauty and health of our sacred space. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Monitoring the health of all plants and ensuring their well-being
  • Watering plants and maintaining irrigation systems
  • Pruning trees, hedges, and shrubs to promote growth and vitality
  • Mowing green spaces and managing weed control for a pristine environment
  • Assisting with garden tours and events, including set up and tear down
  • Harvesting plants for presentations and gifts, and installing signage
  • Providing assistance to visitors and ensuring their enjoyment of the garden
  • Performing light maintenance duties and reporting major maintenance requirements
  • Upholding fire and occupational health and safety practices to ensure a safe working environment

Qualifications Required:

  • Education: Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, with basic knowledge of gardening
  • Training: Occupational First Aid certificate is an asset
  • Experience: Six months to one year of related experience preferred
  • Skills and Abilities: Proficiency in the safe use of garden and landscaping equipment, ability to work independently with minimal supervision, strong interpersonal skills, and physical capability to perform duties, including lifting and walking on uneven surfaces.
