Okanagan Indian Band - Signed Protocol Agreements
Presently, the Okanagan Indian Band has established a productive working relationship with the City of Vernon, District of Lake Country, City of Armstrong, Township of Spallumcheen and the Village of Lumby over the past several years, attributable to Government to Government Protocol Agreements which were signed between 2003 and 2007.
The purpose of the agreements are to outline the overall intention of the Okanagan Indian Band and local governments to enter into a more formal arrangement respecting a long term, cooperative relationship. Further all parties seek to establish effective, adequate communications; cooperation aimed at mutual benefit; and partnerships which create lasting benefits.
In respect to our Aboriginal Title and Rights, nothing in the agreements shall be interpreted in a manner that extinguishes, abrogates or diminishes Aboriginal or Treaty rights, including Aboriginal Title, which are protected under s. 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982. Further nothing in the agreements, or the negotiations leading to it, shall constitute, or be deemed to constitute legal consultation or accommodation in regard to the Aboriginal Title and Rights of the Okanagan Indian Band or the Okanagan Nation.
